Sorensen Angus Ranch is located in Lake Shore, Utah, which is about 7 miles west of Spanish Fork and is family owned and operated by brothers Shane, Kevin and Brian and their mother Marilyn.  The ranch consists of 100 pairs of registered Angus cows, with a few commercial cows used as ET recipients.  In addition, 12-15 registered heifers are added to the herd annually to keep fresh genetics.  The majority of the replacement heifers are bred and born on the ranch, with a few select heifers being purchased each year to add some new genetic lines to compliment the ones we have.

Cattle have been produced for several generations in the Sorensen Family.  Our registered herd started in 1981 when our Dad, Lynn Sorensen, purchased registered Angus heifers for Shane and Kevin as 4-H projects.  Shane was 11 and Kevin was 10 years old.  We showed them at the Utah State Jr. Livestock Show the next spring and took grand and reserve champion.  That was the start of our Angus herd which now numbers 100 mother cows.  Many of our cows trace back to those two females.  In 1988 we purchased some land in Lake Shore, Utah, and began the process of building our facilities.  The only thing on the place when we bought it was some poor fences, a little run down corral and a well.  The only thing left of those items today is the well.  We have built a feedlot that has a capacity of over 200 head.  We raise the majority of the feed to support our operation through the winter months.  The cow herd is summered in private pasture and range in Birdseye, Utah.  Dad passed away at the age of 59, May 1, 2004, when we were in the process of ramping up our cow herd.  Now we have the third generation, Dad’s grandkids, involved in our operation.

Artificial insemination and embryo transfer play a major role in our herd.  In 2014, 75% of our cows received either artificial insemination or had an embryo placed in them.  We try to breed our cattle to possess multiple desirable traits and avoid single trait selection.  Our goal is to breed for moderate framed cows that possess fertility, muscle, thickness, natural fleshing ability, make good mother cows, have good dispositions and have enough eye appeal to compete in the show ring and range bulls that will pass these traits on for the commercial cattleman.

When selecting our herd bulls, we look for a bull that will produce calves that will fit in with calves from our AI and embryo breeding.  Currently, our senior herd sire Bar R 61 Brilliance 1019 (SAV Brilliance 8077 x BCC Bushwacker 41-93), purchased from Bar R Angus in Sloughhouse, CA.  In 2014, we added two new bulls to our lineup.  Lazy JB Dinero 3000 was purchased from  Lazy JB Angus, Montrose, CO, as the high selling bull of their sale.  He is a multi-trait leader and had a PAP score of32.  In addition, we purchased Circle L Gameday 82A (GDAR Gameday 449 x Connealy Lead On) from Circle L Angus, Wise River, MT, as their 3rd high selling bull.  He also has an excellent set of EPD’s and had a PAP score of 38.  His dam is a full sister to Connealy Onward, who is the sire of the breed leading Sitz Upward 307R.  Their first calves look really good as newborns.  Look for their offspring in future our sales.

The use of embryo transfer continues to increase in our herd.  At the top end of the donor pen is Riverbend Forever Lady R106 (Hyline Right Time 338 x Sitz Traveler 8180), purchased as a heifer in the fall of 2005 from Riverbend Ranch, Idaho Falls, ID.  SAR Jacey K5 (HSAF Bando 1961 x Fountains Fortress
